  • 1-Contemplative Worship Service Script, 7-page PDF file. WORD file for publishing text available upon request.

This reflective, light-filled service is a response to the story of Christ’s Passion, mindful of the needs of a community experiencing trauma or raw suffering. With prayers, poems, candle-lighting rituals, beloved hymns, and music the service speaks to the reality of spiritual dangers while leaning upon the blessed Light of God on Good Friday. Based in the classic Christian story of Jesus’ betrayal, trials, death and burial, supported by The Beatitudes and the Lord’s Prayer, the service is enhanced by three poems written by the 14th-century Persian Sufi poet known as “Hafez,” including one about Jesus Christ.

Content includes information about preparing the congregation and worship space for this atypical Good Friday worship service. Please note: Due to copyright laws, this script does not include published poems of Hafez or a recommended prayer written by John Phillip Newell. All are available in published books and are posted online. Notation of sources included in service script.
